The concepts of envelopes and covers of modules have played an important role in the theory of modules and rings and have a great impact on homological algebra and commutative algebra. This presentation gives a brief history of the development of envelopes and coves of modules. Some main results on this subject will be reviewed and some open problems will be discussed.
