Quantitative Reasoning Assessment(QRA)(Formerly the Math Placement Exam)
WVU currently administers this exam to ALL incoming students to determine their level of mathematical ability. It is given in two parts:
Part 1: Basic Algebra -- 25 questions that cover material at the level of high school algebra
Part 2: Calculus Readiness -- 25 questions that cover material from high school algebra II and trigonometry
Each part is 30 minutes long. In any given session, you can expect to have enough time ( 1 hour ) to complete one attempt for each part. Reviewing for the exam is not necessary but if you wish to do so the material from any college algebra course such as the text by Sullivan would be appropriate for the basic algebra portion and any precalculus text would cover material from the calculus readiness test.
Please click here to find out more about the type of questions found on the algebra portion of the exam.

You will need your picture ID, mix user id, and entire id number for the exam. You will also need your mix user id and id number. Please be careful and make sure you have entered the information correctly.
Please note that you may take the QRA a maximum of two times before successfully completing either the math workshop (if you score below 10 on part 1) or a college algebra course (if you score from 10 to 17 on part 1 but don't place into a calculus). After successfully completing a course, you may take it a third time. Your placement into a math course will ultimately be determined by the best of these three scores.
NO OTHER ATTEMPTS MAY BE USED FOR MATH PLACEMENT.
After you have successfully completed the math workshop you will be considered to have placed into college algebra. We will use the final exam from the workshop to assign a new placement score in our system. This score will be equivalent to a Math 126 placement score.
If you wish to take the exam more than three times, you will need to make arrangements to do so with the chemistry department. Please contact them if you have questions about chemistry placement.
QRA for Chemistry
Please note also that we do not maintain the QRA requirements for Chemistry. If you have an SAT score of 600 Math or ACT Math score of 26 to enroll in Chem 115 without the QRA. Our understanding is that you will need at least a 10 on part one for Chem 110 (regardless of your SAT/ACT scores) and 24 total on part 1 and part 2 for Chem 115 (if you do not place in via SAT/ACT or by passing Chem 110).
Contact chemistry if you have any questions regarding these policies.
The next session of testing will be Friday afternoon, December 4 at 2:30p in room 303 of Armstrong Hall and at 4 p.m. in 303 Armstrong Hall. Since space is limited, please go to
